where f(t) -=I0 for 0 :::;; t :::;; t* and is zero otherwise. Response x(t) can be simply calculated for any given f(t) using convolution integral-see, e.g., textbook [1J, where several examples for various specific forms off(t) are presented. In this note an explicit expression for x (t), t ~ t* is derived for an arbitrary f(t), in terms of its Fourier transform. This expression has important implica tions, particularly in that it illustrates an important filtering effect. This makes the example instructive for teaching vibrations and dynamics. A special case of the expression for the undamped system (a = 0) is presented in book [2]. The convolution integral solution for the response x(t) may be written as

A peak filtering method with improved transient response for narrow-band disturbance rejection in hard disk drives

Peak filtering methods are commonly used in track-following control of hard disk drives (HDDs) to suppress narrow-band disturbances around a specific frequency. When there are significant plant dynamics within the bandwidth of the filter, the closed-loop system is prone to be unstable due to the lightly damped poles of the filter, as well as lightly damped poles of the plant. On the other hand,...

A Multi-Objective HBMO-Based New FC-MCR Compensator for Damping of Power System Oscillations

In this paper, a novel compensator based on Magnetically Controlled Reactor with Fixed Capacitor banks (FC-MCR) is introduced and then power system stability in presence of this compensator is studied using an intelligent control method. The problem of robust FC-MCR-based damping controller design is formulated as a multi-objective optimization problem. The multi-objective problem is concocted ...

Transient Nonlinear Vibration of Randomly Excited Cylindrical Shallow Panels in Non Aging Viscous Medium

In this paper, the nonlinear transient vibration of a cylindrical shallow panel under lateral white noise excitation is studied. The panel is in contact with a non aging viscoelastic medium. Since the external load is a time varying random wide band process, deterministic and conventional approaches cannot be used. Instead, the evolution of the probability density function of the response is in...

Frequency Determination in Control Applications: Excitation Based Approach

New algorithms for estimation of the frequencies of oscillating waveform signals are described. Model of the signals is presented in the form of linear difference equation with unknown coefficients, which define the frequencies and amplitudes. Coefficients are estimated utilizing the property of the persistence of excitation of oscillating signals. Exponentially damped and oscillating signals a...
